I WAS RAISED IN PEARLAND AND LEFT IN 1969. THAT WAS THE BEST LITTLE TOWN EVER. MY MOM AND DAD, JOE AND MARGARET KNIGHT, BUILT A HOUSE ON GALVESTON ST NORTH OF THE SCHOOL ON THE DEAD END STREET. GOSH JUST THINKING OF THE FUN WE HAD AS KIDS DOWN AT THE CREEK SHOOTING COTTONMOUTHS, FROGS, WHATEVER WITH OUR REDRIDER BB GUNS. SOMETIMES EVEN CHIEF CASEY WOULD STOP BY TO SAY HI. IT WAS ALSO FULL OF KIDS ALL AGES AND WE ALL WALKED TO SCHOOL TOGETHER. BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE. MAN I MISS THOSE DAYS. I STILL DRIVE DOWN TO GALVESTON ST JUST TO GET OUT AND RELIVE SOME OF THE OLD TIMES AT THE CREEK CAUSE THAT STREET HAS NOT CHANGED ONE BIT.

My parents Herb and Susan Barney moved from Austin to Pearland in 1960, when I was 6 months old. They opened a western store called Barney's Barn on S. Main, I think that was around 64. First house they built was on Mary's Creek/ Dixie Farm Rd. It is still standing. I remember the Jaminsons'Fig Orchards very well , Along with the old railroad depot and other business. I love the old pictures and the history.

I am doing research for a college paper. I have to write about the city I live in and describe it as if I am a vistor. Found out so many interesting facts and history that I did'nt know about. It's funny because I have lived here for 31 years!

Liked the Mark Belt story. Lived here only 15 years, but had not heard the town was ever named anything but Pearland.

Marcus Lindsey Belt (Mark Belt) was born on September 16, 1837 in Lebanon, Kentucky. He gave his name to the spot that was later renamed Pear Land. He died on August 27, 1921 in Higginsville, Missouri.

My parents were introduced by the nephew of Cole Younger, back in Anadarko, Oklahoma; uncle Cole was apparently a friend of your Mr. Belt. Bill [I think it was] Younger worked on my maternall grandfather's farm in Anadarko while his famous uncle was in prison in Oklahoma.

My husband's family tree includes Echolean C. (Zollman) Ackerly who was the first person buried in The Old Settler's Cemetery in Pearland on Aug. 11, 1894. We were delighted to read the Texas Historical Markers and information on this site about Pearland. Echolean and her husband David first left Rockbridge Co., Va. in the mid 1880's for Colfax, Nebraska. Sometime between 1891 and 1894 they came to Pearland. David spent his last days at the Old Confederate's Home in Higginsville, Missouri and is buried there. Amazing how the couple moved around!

Thanks to Dwight Bittick for all his hard work and research, which led to the discovery of the man, "Mark Belt from Mark Belt, Texas" (Pearland's original name) and solved the century-old mystery of whether Mark Belt was railroad jargon or an actual man. Now we know.
